On Friday, March 13th the Big Timber FFA traveled to Dillion, MT for their second set of District competitions. Members performed exceptionally well in Career Development Events (CDEs) including Mechanics, Agronomy, and Farm and Business Management (FBM) as well as the Star Greenhand contest.
The Senior Mechanics team placed 6th overall with individuals Avery Durfee placing 21st, Cody Prather placing 25th, Jake Chulyak placing 13th, and Riley Prather placing 18th. Big Timber’s Junior Mechanics competitor Coltyn LaRue placed 1st in his division.
Individuals competing in FBM included Brayden Young, Gracie Fleming, Kiera Myrstol, and Raelynn Thomasson, placing 1st, 3rd, 17th, and 2nd respectively. These outstanding scores resulted in an overall 1st place ranking for the team.
Big Timber FFA continued showing their talent in the Agronomy CDE and the Star Greenhand test. Agronomy competitors Brealyn LaRue and Raelynn Thomasson placed 2nd and 19th respectively, earning a 6th place team score. The chapter’s Star Greenhand, Jake Chulyak, placed 3rd.
Chapter Advisor, Austin Standley, explains his thoughts on the district competitions, “I am thrilled, but not surprised that our FFA members did so well. The knowledge and skills gained in agricultural education classes provides a foundation for student success. Add to that the hours of hard work spent practicing and it’s no wonder our kids shined. I will say, though that having 6 students place top 3 puts us in some pretty elite company."
